Coalville RFC has become the first club in Leicestershire to be called a ‘Kids First’ rugby club as part of a new RFU initiative that wants to put children at the heart of its development programme.
The award forms part of England Rugby’s grassroots programme and is aimed at taking advantage of the build up to the Rugby World Cup in 2015. Ruckley, England’s world cup mascot, is the face of the Kids First initiative and is set to appear prominently as the build-up gains momentum.
Coalville’s mini and junior section was selected because of its record in ensuring that the needs of children are always put first. Managers and coaches recently underwent training from Darren Gourley, the RFU’s Player Development Officer, which was partly classroom and practical based. The course involved the creation of a club manifesto, the planning and implementation of player development pathways and making sure that children’s enjoyment is always fundamental to the training and playing at Coalville. Children will receive a sticker book which they complete as they work towards different aspects of their development.
‘It’s a great honour to be chosen to become a Kids First club. We got some great feedback from our training and I know that coaches are itching to use the Kids First resources in their games and training sessions. A lot of hard work has been put in to get us to where we are today but the future looks even better with the needs of the children placed firmly at the heart of our philosophy.’ commented Martin Lester the Mini Coordinator at Coalville.
